Thoughts: Just Cause 2.

boom

It’s puzzled me for a while that these days, if you want to play a GTA game, the last thing you actually want to do is play a GTA game. The GTA franchise has become bloated with its own self-importance, with the developers preferring to tell tedious gangland stories in the not-so-charming delusion that they are auteur filmmakers while the vehicle-based mayhem the series made such an impact with all those years ago has been firmly relegated to the back seat. It’s telling that this gap in the market is now being filled by a whole raft of pretenders to the GTA throne, which try to sell themselves on the open-world sandbox gameplay rather than plot. Mercenaries was the most effective one (with the apt subtitle Playground of Destruction), and then Saints Row 2 (never played it), and now there is Just Cause 2.

Thoughts: Hitman – Blood Money.

clown

Blood Money is an astonishing game, and after playing it I understand why the developers packed in the Hitman franchise temporarily and started crapping out Kane & Lynch games. After Blood Money, there was simply nowhere left for the series to go. It had reached its peak. I should stress I’m not saying Blood Money is astonishing in terms of raw quality. It’s a very, very solid game, to be sure, but its strength lies in the game’s major stylistic choice. Blood Money isn’t a Hitman game. Blood Money is a parody of Hitman games.

Thoughts: Shogun 2.

The more I play Shogun 2, the more I’m starting to think Total War games have a fundamental mechanical flaw. Yes, yes, we’ve all seen the botched attempts of the Rome-Medieval-Empire era – schizophrenic AI combined with a more fluid, realistic campaign map which in practice led to some infuriating gameplay tics – but with each of those games, the problem appeared to be specific to the game in question. Usually it was the CA’s crappy AI coding. In Empire’s case it was also a case of sprawling scope and the series first flirtation with the gunpowder era producing – aha – a serious misfire. But Shogun 2 is the first game to make me think that Total War games, in their current form, simply will not work.

Thoughts: Dragon Age 2.

I do not understand this game. I do not understand how Bioware, a company known for make solid if somewhat unimaginative RPGs, let it get past the proof-of-concept stage. It’s the first significant deviation from the formulaic approach that has served them well in the past, and as a result it is dull as fuck.

Thoughts: Overlord 2.

1

I’m sorry. I tried to give Overlord 2 a chance, I really did. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone into it straight after abandoning the first game in a fit of tedium. Maybe I should have left it a while so that the wounds could heal. Sadly I wanted to get both games done so that I could delete them from the Steam account and never look back, so I started Overlord 2 with the dull mediocrity of the first game still seared into my cerebral cortex. Overlord 2 is no different, alas.

Thoughts: Overlord.

overlord

Overlord, then. It’s packaged and sold as “Pikimin crossed with Dungeon Keeper”, or perhaps just “Pikimin for assholes”; the basic premise of the game is that you wander around with an army of little imp-like minions expanding your evil empire. Now, it’s worth noting that any game that has me playing an evil dick overlord is going to get a high score regardless of quality, because that is how I roll.

Overlord is not going to get a high score.
