August Hiatus

lied

You know when I said that the spotty period was over and that I was going to be posting more regularly?

I lied.

Well, I guess I didn’t really lie as such. I just forgot that August is traditionally crazy for me what with Space School sucking up my free time for the first two weeks, and then work has seen fit to send me to San Francisco for another week so I can’t even think about writing until that’s all out of the way. It’s a shame to leave the blog for that long as I’ve been at it for long enough that it’s become something of a habit and feels kind of weird not to write anything, but important life things must take precedence. All being well, Scientific Gamer will return the week of the 25th August — we have a bank holiday that weekend, so I will have absolutely no excuse for not posting something. See you guys then.

(Oh, and I would also like you to know that even though finding time to respond is difficult these days I do appreciate the comment threads on here. I shall try at least to work through the most recent ones tomorrow.)

    LOVE your tags, man!
    Have a nice trip!

  2. You bastard.

You’ve left me with SpaceChem on my desktop and now I’m scared or turning my PC on. Thank god I didn’t buy Android version.

Anyway, while you’re at it. What would be your advices on developing text- and menu-based game? The one where you don’t move your character and don’t even click where you want him to go, but rather read about what’s happening, check various menus and get to more complex actions than go there and kill those. Something like King of Dragon Pass.

“Make it like King of Dragon Pass.”

Helpful, I know. Also bear in mind that indie game development is littered with the corpses of unfinished games that tried to do the KoDP thing and didn’t realise how much work it’d be. Keep the scope of the project narrow, and do not exceed that scope – you’ll do far better to produce something small and focused than something that sprawls but which is shallow as hell. Also you might actually stand a chance of finishing it at some point in the next decade.

      • Thanks. I’ve already finished one game being very cautious so it was really narrow ang roguelikelike. Nowadays I want to do both graphical and inderect-laid back-menu based control thing.

Have fun! August is a busy month for me, too, since I start up classes again. And it is a weirdly dry month for games, too. Thankfully I’m inexplicably excited for the PS4 version of Diablo III.

    • Hentzau says:

Odd, isn’t it? I know August is a fairly lean month at the best of times, but I can’t remember the last time there was a month where there wasn’t a single game released that I wanted to play.

    Space School sounds pretty epic.

    • Hentzau says:

It *is* pretty epic. So epic that we nearly had our own Nedelin catastrophe by killing a crowd of spectators with a mis-launched rocket this year.

Any (I presume) educational camp for kids that is potentially lethal sounds good to me. Is this linked to your day job?

August Hiatus is a great name for an action hero.

Glad to get the update, as I like to drop in and see what’s what. Looking forward to any further thoughts on Divinity after your rage quit.
