Yeah, I mean I’m probably being massively unfair here, but I’m interested in alternate history stories that seem organic. Like, one thing happened differently in the past and everything naturally spiralled from there resulting in a radically different universe. Unfortunately that plot summary read like he was repainting the White House purple just because he could. To me, anyway. It was less a plausible “what if?” scenario and more “let’s jam in every single piece of failed/experimental space science of the last thirty years for the sake of it”.

Harsh, man. Well, maybe not so much with the latter two books which dive into whacky sci-fi, but I do recommend Voyage – the science seems broadly plausible (albeit this is coming from a relative layman) and it’s mostly about the subjective experiences and the politics anyway.

Did you ever get around to reading Stephen Baxter’s alternate-history NASA trilogy? Voyage in particular gave a very good feel of the highs and lows of being a member of the space program.
