I agree very much with your assessment of the lack of battlescape fatigue. I have never played an Xcom game or Xcom clone in which I didn't at some point get sick of all the battles and just want them to go away so I could research a few things and focus on the geoscape. Until now. At no point did I have to suck it up and just go on another mission. It was always exciting and I always looked forward to it.

There were times when I had a tiny fraction left on a scanning project and a time sensitive mission would come up and I would feel quite inconvenienced, but never because I was tired of battle.

I understand that when thing like that occur it can be quite frustrating, but in my experience of the game those were the most thrilling missions. That first codex mission amazed me. I felt so beat up yet so accomplished. I have to say, overall Xcom 2 has really impressed me.

Ha! After reading your review I deliberately opted to not choose that research when it was offered. I also wonder if the doomsday clock will just start at 0 if you try to avoid triggering story missions, which I am currently doing until I understand the systems better.

If anything I think XCOM 2 demonstrates *why* they get a free turn, as slaughtering unaware groups of enemies during ambushes is just not remotely fair. Even then the free turn just makes them scatter a bit, and they'll usually all still be in the blast radius of a single upgraded plasma grenade in the late game.

With you on the UI, though. I just had a great one where I moved my grenadier in to take a final shot at the alien relay with one turn left on the timer, clicked on the relay icon at the bottom of the screen, clicked "Yes, shoot at this"... only for her to shoot at a Muton on the other side of the map that her move had brought her into range of; the game hadn't seen fit to update the targeting icons for some reason. *All* of Firaxis's games pull this shit. It's getting silly now.

See, in situations like that I'd absolutely reload the game. XCOM totally loses all meaning if you abuse it, but I think that if there's no way to adequately prepare for it then it's fair game. Were you playing on Ironman?

Absolutely. I started on Classic, and pretty much immediately downgraded to Normal because the game's failure to explain stuff was getting my soldiers killed. I never had to reload past the first few missions, fortunately, but if I'd skulljacked the Advent Officer when it told me to you can bet I would have broken that streak of no-reloads.

I installed it towards the end of last year, but I decided I didn't want to burn myself out on XCOM so close to XCOM 2. I do mean to go back and try it, though - XCOM 2 makes big improvements, but the geoscape is still pretty easy to game even on Classic. It'd be nice to actually feel pressured there even though I know what's coming.

Oh god that first codex, I activated it and it teleporting/copying around caused me to stupidly activate two pods, only two operatives of my top squad remained.

Amen on the screw-up events! A codex was responsible for my first wipe, and I never really recovered from it. I'm playing through the campaign on Easy now to get a feel for what's new and what works best, because on Normal the sheer amount of stuff--that's not always well-explained--was overwhelming me.
