[…] flatmate didn’t keep going on about it all the time? Ah, well, given the highly uneven quality of Wasteland 2 and Torment and my complete lack of caring about the source material I think I might pass this […]

Bethesda, if nothing else, has mastered the art of world building in a physical/visual sort of way. FO3's Capital Wasteland was SOoooo interesting to explore compared to FNV. Granted, FNV is supposed to be in a desert, I get it, the areas where there could be something more interesting/spatial going on are just bland. It's bad level design in a way - and ultimately it's why FNV wasn't memorable at all for me.

Also FNV shows it's not enough to be hardcore to live in a modern world. Unlike original Fallout 3 developers Obsidian couldn't do a thing with numerous things Bethesda just made and left for them to use. They didn't like Karma system, okay. They couldn't think of interesting systems with travelling people, riiight. But there are almost no random encounters in the game. The world feels much smaller and not so sandboxy.

And most importantly FNV doesn't use the third dimension. At all. I remember interesting fights in Washington DC ruins where ruins mattered as gameplay element. In FNV all multileveled ruins are removed far from battles and even vaults - designed to be multilevel - are made so that you don't have shootings in them. I'm delighted to see Obsidian working on South Park and Pillars of Eternity games cause it's obvious they have problems progressing from technology of 1999.

I'm all for good hardcore games but I suddenly stopped wanting to play this game when I've learned there's Toaster Repair skill in it. It tells almot anything you want to know about the game. Yeah, and Red Boots DLC in the main menu. It's some sort of wierd infantile behaviour, like 25 year old guy who says girls are stupid and plays with toy soldiers doing bang-bang and looking down on his friends who all betrayed the cool boy life and got a family.

There's some of it in recent Beyond Divinity (oh this evil crafting) but it doesn't drop all of this on you in a first minute of a game.

I love this blog because 95% Hentzau's sentiments echo my own. Maybe I'm just jaded at this point, or have just been playing PC games too long, but most games I come across unravel for me for one reason or another and I lose all interest in it. Hardly any games have really stuck for me the way games 15 or 20 years ago seemed to (not that everything was gold back then either mind you).
