Actually, I don't see why a Total War game couldn't work on consoles. The strategic side should be fine (assuming they do an appropriate job of resizing the interface). The tactical battles could be tricky, but I play them via frequent pausing anyway. It's not Starcraft or something.

No real indication of anything to do with consoles. It makes a beautiful narrative that people jump to but...

Radial menus are generally a good idea. They're potentially extremely useful whether you're using finger, or thumbstick or mouse. Interesting design decision not taken?

Also devs say it's just a menu options they've tried to implement. Looks suspicious of course, but why would that lie about it now?

Don't be so harsh. If they pull it off they might change the gaming and make consoles much more appealing and interesting.

Of course, in this case it'll become very obvious that we noble PC master race were used as payed beta-testers. Vengeance will follow.

It is confirmed, SEGA is desperately trying (or tried) to push Rome 2 to next-gen consoles,
management must be quite distracted from reality to not understand that some genres will never work with a controller.

It's difficult to say since it largely comes down to personal taste in which period of history you prefer. Rome is the most colourful and lively of the Total War games, but it's also decidedly old school in terms of its design. This doesn't mean it's showing its age since it just does things rather differently to the later games in the series, but it does mean it'll be of limited value as an entry point as Shogun 2 and Rome are very different games.

On the other hand if you just want an introduction to the Total War system of turn-based empire map and real-time tactical battles, then yes. Again, it's personal preference, but I do think Rome is the first or second-best Total War game the CA have made.

There's a lot of stuff in Rome 2 that, executed properly, could make a pretty good Total War game (although I'm unsure if it would sit in the top three). Unfortunately almost none of it is, and I think the non-Roman armies do have the Empire problem where they're fairly generic stacks of two or three unit types.

I don't think the whole province specialisation thing is horrible, I just think squalor is a horrible way of going about it. Penalising a player for building an upgrade is regressive game design of the worst kind, and there's better ways of going about it. The food requirement is a requirement and that's fine, but having nonsensical public order penalties is not.
