I kinda felt like I didn't get enough out of Pripyat. At the start it was pretty fun to be underpowered, and to be invited on a night mission and think "fuck that, I'm staying put", which is pretty rare for a game. But once I got some decent guns I wasn't too hard put on comparatively.

I would have to go back and check, but the two major factors would be a) lack of truly threatening enemies (all the ones I saw were fairly weak and required no special tactics to defeat other than shooting them with a gun) and b) the sound design wasn't as good. Sound design is a very big part of atmosphere, for me, and while I don't recall thinking Pripyat's sound design was particularly bad in the swamp it failed to generate a real sense of nervous unease with me.

Now, when I got to the factory-type place in the middle of a huge thunderstorm and there was weird anomaly shit floating around, *that* was atmospheric. Like I say, I really do need to go back to Pripyat. It can do atmosphere when it wants to and it's possible I just caught the swamp at a bad time.

That is what I'm referring to; Zaton is the name of the area, at least according to the loading screens.

So now I have to know: what is so inferior about the Call of Pripyat swamp? It's set in a fairly deep valley and the reeds in the area block your view. Most enemies in the area are relatively easy to deal with, but there's always a chance for snorks and bloodsuckers to pop out and scare the hell out of you. Combine those features with the game's pitch-black nights and you've got an area that's very stressful to travel through.

Admittedly, I haven't played the game without the Complete mod since it became available. I'm rarely someone who wants total overhaul mods--barring ones which fix bugs and add removed contents, like in Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines--but it's a big improvement over the vanilla version without really changing the gameplay.

WELCOME TO OUR SWAMP ICEBREAKER. But no, I think it's just two similar games coincidentally hitting the same notes, except Last Light's version is much more atmospheric thanks to its more focused nature.

Pripyat has been on my to-play list for about two years now. I should probably do something about that.
