I keep hearing about bugs, but I spent all weekend playing it and enjoyed myself. Or is your recommendation based off of other things? In which case I'll happily wait for your review to argue (and probably agree on a few things, like the atrocious UI).

My issue with it was the punishing difficulty, which is the same problem I have with Grimrock's combat. I'll concede that it was at its core a more interesting system, but that doesn't mean a great deal when it still becomes the main blocker to your progress; it's not a ticket to success if you mess up the other elements of your design, and Grimrock gets those other elements so very, very right.

Yes, but you can only set it at the start of the game. So don't do what I did and play on Normal assuming you can dial it down later.

As Darren said, combat wasn't that bad in MMX (they've called it Legacy because of Intel copyright, correct?). Strange we don't have more of Wizardry/MM clones and remakes as they don't seem to require as much developer effort as all those XCOM remakes we've seen through the years. They seem to be popular on consoles though AFAIK but we PC master race only have this clickfest (I've seen videos and tactical battles look exactly like that: click and retreat).

I really, really hated the combat in the first game, it's the only thing that prevented me from completing it. Does #2 have a difficulty setting? I'm thinking of maybe giving this a go if I can just dial the combat down into irrelevance.

I really liked the combat in MM Legacy, but everything else was all over the place in quality. I keep hoping that some enterprising indie will pick up that strain of dungeon crawler and do something cool.

Because last time somebody tried that we got Might and Magic Legacy. The decision to make the combat real-time is something that will likely plague Grimrock for some time to come since I don't think they'll ever really be able to make it work properly, but making it turn-based isn't a guarantee of success either.
