The game will only last as long as there are new cards to unlock, but that's the nice thing about Hand of Fate being a card game - because adding a card is relatively low effort they've been able to put in hundreds of the things.

(Some of the individual cards themselves are a bit dodgy, mind. I didn't like the one that took away all of my food for failing a luck draw. Still, it's part and parcel of the type of game Hand of Fate is, I guess.)

Ooof, that'd be sailing very close to the wind if Hero Quest wasn't nearly 30 years old at this point.

What I meant was more that I'd like for someone to make a version of Hero Quest with the same tactile interaction re: cards and playing pieces that Hand of Fate has. That would provide cover for Hero Quest's relatively weak mechanics, and with the various expansions I think there's enough campaign content there to support a fairly meaty game.

Interesting, because having played some of it, what bothered me was that I thought the various encounters would start to get boring and repetitive after a while. I actually didn't realise that you get tokens for completing an encounter for the first time; I thought that aspect of it was just random.

So far I've yet to get to the point where the combat is annoying (although there's no way I could play without a gamepad), but reading this I have no doubt it'll happen. The last game I can remember playing that had this dichotomy was Legend of Grimrock. Loved the thoughtful bits, but ultimately got put off by the real-time combat. Oh well.

Still, as you say there's a lot of good to it.

It annoyed the hell out of me, and I really like that style of combat system. Even if it was executed as well as it was in the Batman games, it'd still be an awful addition to the game because it's so utterly at odds with the rest of it. I'm all for mixing genres in unexpected ways, but this is just a jarring mismatch.

Hand of Fate is a good game despite this, but it's major impact on me has been to make me really want somebody to do a videogame of Hero Quest now.

Every review of this says the combat system is an iffy fit at best. I have to say that it's not even a good idea on paper, as there's little that will piss off an RPG/deckbuilder player than suddenly requiring a test of reflexes.
