I had Atty Affo, a Togolese striker I signed for pennies and produced 40+ goals a season. He was the reason I took about 8 titles in a row with Rangers and then I brought him with me when I was offered the Man Utd job. He kept scoring and was worth about 90 million according to the game. This was in CM01/02 and it's a credit to the game that I still have some sort of attachment to him after 10 years. I had always assumed he was a randomly generated player, but turns out he's real and played in midfield.

In FM2007 my best keeper was Mikel Arteta. For some reason the game had decided he could play in any position on the field and turns out he's an amazing goalkeeper that I could throw into midfield if I needed to change things. I did feel a bit guilty because that was clearly a bug that had formed when it created the database.

Gateshead!

But yeah, the overwhelming tale of my forty-odd seasons there was a sort of gradual, iterative improvement. The games weren't the point, really, it was what went between them, building up a trustworthy, non primadona squad that could claw me up from the conference to the champions league, for more or less free. Cutting loose the expensive guys who would doom me financially, or destroy my morale, and trying to desperately to hold off the much-better funded Man City, Newcastle (?) and Southampton (???) who were continually trying to steal my players or take my targets. You spend a lot of time watching those matches so you get quite a connection to the ones that do well for you, that you brought up from the youth squad. The piece that made my Gateshead team work was an Irish midfielder called Larry Brennan who I bought on a hunch for about 30k from some backwater Irish team when he was 16. Twenty seasons later and he was still team captain, had been to World Cup Finals, won a dozen league titles and single-handedly won two champions league finals. He was now old and slow, not much actual use compared to the collection of young bucks I had phased in, but I kept him on a token wage, giving him token appearances, because he meant so much to the club. No game has ever made me feel like that about some randomly-generated NPC.

Here is my management strategy: shuffle players around until all the dots are green. Start with a 4-4-2 formation because it looks like the double line of spearmen that have brought me many victories in Total War, and use an Attacking strategy with the touchline instruction of Work Ball Into Box. If this fails to work, or if the opposition score an early goal, switch to 4-3-2-1, picked because it is both numerically pleasing and because it looks like the flying wedge formation policement use to subdue protes- I mean, subversive elements. Follow all the automated advice otherwise. That is literally it.

You need to show me what you're doing because I cannot consistently win in this game. The game is lot less of the random number generator when you're losing games. Small formation changes, a substitution or a change of tempo can win you the game or doom you to a heavy defeat.

I cut Dwarf Fortress a lot of slack because it's free, and Toady is under bugger all obligation to put anything in the game that he doesn't want to. If he re-released the same game every year for £30 I'd be far more annoyed about the complete lack of tutorial, the ASCII art, the keyboard-only interface etc. etc.,but as it is he can do whatever he wants with the damn thing as far as I'm concerned. I just won't play it, is all.
