The remake is almost there. I hope they translate it decently (they mostly need to update Genesis texts) though I have Russian version pre-ordered.
Picked this up based on the writeup, and I agree that it's very good. I also agree that it's a shame that the game boils down to "beat the AI." I always enjoyed Disciples and Disciples II because they featured a bunch of single player maps that focused on clearing ruins, capturing towns, or killing specific monsters. I've always wished some other games would've taken a cue from them.

I shall give it a try, can't go far wrong for just $6. Maybe the AI is moddable...

Love HoMM and really like this too. I've played quite a lot of it when it came out, and a little more again about a year ago when I was getting hungry reading about the remake. It's a very very Russian take on the genre, and a far more accomplished one than Nival's actual HoMM attempt.

It's true that it's punishing and I think you're right that as a strategy vs other AI players it doesn't quite cut it. It's still very fun playing through the initial expansion bit of it and learning about all that you can do. I've only really fought through the endgame grind once and I can't say it left me with much satisfaction - I do hope they work on it for the remake.

Anyway, glad that you enjoyed it and that the English translation is a good one! (I've only ever played it in Russian)
