The problem with denying, I think, is that it's completely gamey. You can suspend disbelief in centaurus buying shoes, but killing your own guys so that enemy doesn't get exp and gold destroys the illusion of epic battle. In Starcraft we have glorified exploits like mutasteck, and it's hard to imagine what it means in context of the world. Denying is like that.

See, that abundance of shops makes everything too complex. Also Dota seems too unforgiving. I imagine you still can win after enemy is near your base, but every mistake is too serious. If you die in LoL, you feed enemy team and can't farm and help your team for some time. If you die in Dota, you also lose money. In LoL enemy can destroy your Inhibitor and spawn powerful minions, but inhibitor will respawn in several minutes and you can still fight back. In Dota enemy destroys your baracks and you don't spawn minions at all, forever (baracks do not regenerate, right?). I understand it's a minor issue for professional gamers, but in Dota 2 you can loose in first 5 minutes of the game as I see it. And then you slowly die with a very little chance of counterstrike.

The only reason they're "releasing" Dota now is because the International -- the biggest esports event in the West -- is on in a month and they both want that to draw in new players and to provide the International with as large an audience as possible. Despite its protracted development Dota 2 is, arguably, the first game Valve has ever released early, and I guess they felt able to do that because Dota 2 will *always* be in development as long as its bringing in the money so it made little difference as to whether they released now or in three months time.

Everyone complains about denying and I don't understand why. You kill your own creep and the enemy team get less experience and no gold. The tangos are also fairly easy. The shop interface and the secret shops, on the other hand, I will give you; it's not so much that they're there, it's that they coexist with a *third* type of shop -- the side shop -- that has items from both the secret shops and the regular shop. I still don't know what items you can and can't get from the side shop apart from Arcane Boots.

And yes, Dota 2 does get better. The learning curve is immense but the matchmaking system is fairly good at pitting you against opponents who are at least inhabiting the same part of it that you are, which mostly gives you the space you need to gradually soak up the game while having fun. You'll get stomped occasionally, but even there you can learn something from players who are better than you. Still, it really isn't for everyone, and I know LoL players tend to have difficulty making the switch thanks to the subtle differences between the two games. Despite being superficially similar they're very different experiences.

I play League of Legends from time to time and Dota 2 looks like something more complex with better UI (except shop. Dota 2 shop interface is terrible) LoL tries too hard to make it's heroes interesting - generic fantasy-style Dota 2 champions feel much more appropriate. Still I've only played a single game of Dota 2 only playing LoL before and I feel it's excessively complex with too many stats and systems like denying, secret shops, tree-hugging for health.

Does it get better? In LoL new player quickly switches from "why does everyone kills me?" mode to competent understanding of what happens in the game. Dota 2 looks like chess with a hundred of figures were you must have hundreds of hours to understand gameflow.

Also, it still feels beta-ish. Though I've heard it's out this summer.
