It's been extremely interesting keeping up with the discourse around Doom Eternal.

The story is indeed puzzlingly bad, but I think in terms of gameplay it's overall better than Doom 2016...once you have all the upgrades. Tearing through the levels with a maxed out Slayer is significantly different and better, every tool in your arsenal serving a distinct purpose, like a breakneck version of Dishonored. Ammo ceases to be an issue when you understand the role of the chainsaw, but unlike in Doom 2016 it is limited enough that you won't be ignoring entire weapons for basically the entire game (like Doom 2016's piddly plasma rifle). Having said that, I played the game on PS4, and I wonder if the control differences make it more manageable.

On the subject of the gameyness of Doom Eternal, I think people are forgetting the rapturous reception to Doom 2016's post-launch arcade mode. The levels have been designed to be much more arcade-like, certainly, and the life system is artificial as hell. Similarly, the bizarre but engaging Battlemode is a direct response to the wholesale rejection of Doom 2016's bog-standard deathmatch mode. Doom Eternal is the game that id thinks people wanted based on what they said about the last game. I think it makes a bad first impression but mostly delivers on that goal, but it seems a lot of people disagree.

Yeah, I absolutely think my 2007 interpretation of Modern Warfare was incorrect now. It does achieve its goal of being a videogame port of a bunch of action movies mangled together, and it does it very well -- far better than any of the CoDs that followed. But god, I can't believe I was ever so naive as to look at it and think "hmmm yes this has a powerful anti-war message". I still look at certain bits of it that way, like the AC-130 level and the nuke scene, because I personally do find the idea of TV warfare quite unsettling, but the overall package is extremely "Hey, war is actually really cool and we can solve all of our problems by shooting them!" just like the action movies it imitates. And you're definitely right in saying that any lingering anti-war sentiment that's present is only there because the films it's imitating also had them.

Interesting thought about Modern Warfare but I don't think it really works. CoDMW just thoughtlessly copies war movies. They would take something like "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" from Apocalypse Today and allow their hero to unironically say it while murdering baddies while heroic orchestra plays in the background. They include scense informing you that war is actually hell just because movie directors do it. Videogames can't rely on subtlety when they have so many things demanding player attention. A game like Spec Ops The Line bashes anti-war message in your head and is still considered subtle. More mainstream war games only include "morally grey" things as a trope, it's not a manly entertainment if your cop doesn't have to break the law to get a bad guy or your brave troops aren't forced to slaughter civilians to save the world.

Your idea that Doom 2016 came out so good because they didn't have time to insert more dramatic exposition is great, even if I still hope that it was just better directed - Doomguy's disrespect to people telling him plot is a running joke and that 5 minute sentence is forced by a robot CEO magical technology after repeated appeals didn't work.
