Yeah, I think that's the big problem here - they have no sense of scale anymore. Everything has to somehow be bigger and more explosive.

But that's not quite how good things work - you need layers of stuff and you need to put everything together sensibly. At the end of the day they're making the game from the point of view of "It will sell millions of copies... but just how many?" instead of "man, nobody's going to buy this unless we make it absolutely bloody brilliant". It is very clear from the game how much the ideology is at heart and how ruinous it is. Not completely, because they get a lot of things right, and time has at least allowed them to focus on vast improvements to some aspects of the game, but still.

Great review. I felt exactly the same way about everything you said. The mechanics are fantastic, the in-you-face story is annoying as it is lame. I'd also like to add the music in D3 falls short. I can sit here and hum several tunes from D2. I remember really feeling like I was really in Lut Gholein or Kurast just because the arab or jungle tone set the mood.

I think all the problems discussed above are symptoms of a bigger problem at bliz that has been going on for several years now. I call it the problem of EPIC. Everything is so EPIC! EPIC music EPIC story EPIC GEAR EPIC! There is nothing subtle anymore. Everything is very clearly black and white. You're not just some nobody rolling in to hunt demons. You are the M-Fing Nephlem-Angel-Demon-ChosenOne mashup here to kick ass like no other. They did the same shit with SC2 (If only you could have killed Matt Horner...) It's really a shame and it makes me sad because I know things will only progress down this path further from now on.

Yeah, the dress-up I like, but... I don't know - to a large extent the items you use are based on stats rather than appearance by necessity, so there is not much scope for getting the right look unless you disadvantage yourself or search obsessively or something.

Dyes help I suppose.

I admit a large part of the loot draw for me is dressing up my little hero-doll in an awesome outfit and looking awesome while punching monsters. Which is why I was a little annoyed that last night's auction house binge moved my Wizard away from the awesome flowing robe outfit and towards looking like what I *would* call an exotic hooker if that term wasn't more than a little bit sexist/racist.
