Sounds like it's very much in keeping with Human Revolution, in that it's very close to being a great game but there's still a nagging feeling that something is off, lots of great ideas that don't quite gel into a perfect whole.

I'm glad Deus Ex lives on but it's a shame they've never been able to recapture the magic of the original game.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the Director's Cut of Human Revolution. The Missing Link is a tangential, pace-killing intrusion, I don't like how it auto-allocates a number of skill points right out of the gate, the performance is *worse* than the original release, and while I like the revised boss encounters I found that the answer is to just invest in the suicide-bomber aug. Actually, since that aug is both plot relevant, thematically fitting, and extremely situational, they could probably have solved the boss issue by just giving you that one aug for free out of the gate.

I don't really like speculating on the specific reason Mankind Divided ended up this way since it could be any one of a hundred things - or any combination of those hundred. With Squeenix's big push for the Deus Ex Universe it's certainly plausible that they might have cut content to put into another game, but we won't know until they announce it.

I had basically the same reaction to MD's energy system during the first hour since it isn't explained all that well, and most of what you use in the tutorial are the chunky abilities with large upfront energy costs. Dishonored's system certainly isn't perfect, but it's the best I've encountered so far at striking the correct balance between restricting the player and enabling them. In fact if anything MD's implementation probably errs too far towards the enabling side, since you can trivialise much of the game by investing in cloaking and all the energy bar upgrades and ghosting through levels from cover to cover. An energy bar that fully regenerates is a very dangerous thing.

I think the six month delay was probably down to the developers realising there was *something* about the game that just wasn't going to fly -- whether that was related to current events or not is pure speculation though. It reminds me of Thief 2014 somewhat, although MD at least had a solid mechanical base for whatever redesign it subsequently went through and so the major impact is felt in the narrative more than anywhere else.

And MD is possibly the quintessential "Buy On Sale" game. Also, based on what happened with HR I wouldn't bet against there being a Director's Cut you can pick in up a year or two that will hopefully take the time to fill in some of the holes.

I don't know the truth about it, but there have been a lot of rumors swirling around that Square-Enix forced Mankind Divided to be separated into a trilogy rather than remain a single game. Whether this was done out of generalized greed and mismanagement or because the Deus Ex team really did have an over-ambitious plan that needed to be adjusted (or some combination thereof) isn't clear, but it certainly seems to mesh with what I'm hearing about the ending. There's a Jim Sterling video out that is quite informative on this front.

My boyfriend is playing the game, and it does give players the option to start with a *12 minute* summary of the first game. That's probably not actually enough for even some returning players, but it's an attempt.

It's interesting that you cite the energy mechanic as being identical to Dishonored's. My first thought was that the system seemed better than Human Revolution's but still bad, and I didn't recognize it as Dishonored's system at all. In fact, I'm not a huge fan of Dishonored's system; since most games will wisely be pretty cavalier with dispensing potions, I prefer an auto-regen system that can be improved at the cost of precious skill points.

Pretty much. Dishonored doesn't have a good story, but the story it does have is at least functional in terms of how it is structured. I would also argue that it tends towards Thief more than it does Deus Ex, where the focus is much more on the mechanical challenge of individual levels than it is how those levels tie together into a coherent story (although Thief did do a pretty good job of that too), and so the relatively weak story isn't crippling in the way it is for Mankind Divided..
