To not have a return vehicle for *when* (not if) things go wrong is unthinkable. Every enclosed habitat sooner or later has a problem with the micro-organisms, oxygen replenishment, waste processing, food production, something. I haven't even bothered to look at the Mars One plan in detail, so now that you've brought up the solar panel thing I find it even more laughable.

I do have some hope that we'll see a government-funded return to the Moon or even a trip to Mars in my lifetime -- it seems rather unreasonable that nobody would even make the attempt over the next half-century. On the other hand the world will probably deteriorate into a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic wasteland by then, so perhaps not.

We just need a good old space war to drive government funding into manned spaceflight. Provided we don't get Kessler Syndrome in the process. Oh, and granted that this doesn't prevent Mars from being a desolate wasteland ages away from anywhere.

Of course you're right, but I'll still be keenly following the progress of Mars one, just in case it does work out. And you know, the alternative that we've wasted 50 years of manned space exploration time and have no foreseeable plan to rectify that is just too depressing.
