Actually, Lobstermen are just having huge amount of health, and not so thick armour. Two Sonic Cannon shots almast always get any Lobsterman down. Or even Cannon + Rifle.
Sonic Pulser is also very handy...

Just finished this on veteran for the first time. Fucking difficult, still a good game but a few things make it objectively worse than the original, namely:

*Two part missions are a slog, nobody wants to spend over an hour crawling through various corridors
*Ship terror missions are an extra slogfull slog due to the fact that you have to search through every cabin
*Still the same theme, the battlescape maps are too large and thus take too long to finish
*The end game is straight up bad (the entirety of Tleth is just badly designed, linear two story levels that'll take two-three hours to wade through? Jesus man)

I'll be honest with you, I can't remember a huge amount about Apocalypse except a strong impression that it didn't really work for me; the alien designs especially were a huge turnoff and such a step away from the iconic UFO aliens. It had a lot of good ideas, though; I'd really like for someone to go back and revisit the concept today.

I see your point about Extraterrestrials and honestly I barely remember enough about the game to defend it..

..however I will defend Apocalypse. Between it's styalized retro Philip K. Dick-esque city, it's interesting faction politics, and it's real time combat system, I found it to be an interesting and satisfying new take on the franchise.

I am disappointed with the destructible terrain options they went with in the modern XCOM. I mean, it's tied in neatly for the 'everything's a grid or table' board game mechanics they've gone for, but I am always reminded of how beautiful the destructible terrain stuff was in Silent Storm and what options that offered you from the mid-game. Just not the same when your options is - make a piece of cover become not a piece of cover.

That's the one that used the Quake 2 engine, isn't it? I never played it, and the reason for that is because it had no destructible terrain. I think the ability to remodel the battlefield is quintessential to XCOM, so Extraterrestials doesn't qualify.

(And Apocalypse isn't a bad game. I'm just not sure whether or not it's a *good* one.)

Great review. You're not kidding about the difficulty of this game. I'm proud to say I was able to finish this game back when I had that level of patience. I think one more flaw to point out might be that in this nook and cranny level design, it could take a very long time just to locate the last alien on the map.

You're certainly right about how great this game was though. Just the atmosphere alone was incredible. It was absolutly terrifying. The music is such a nightmare, in a good way.

Don't you almost insult Apocalypse though. You know you love that game too. How can you not?

One last thing. No one ever seems to acknowledge Ufo:Extraterrestrials as an Xcom game. Why is that? A modern remake of the original that stuck to the old formula. I don't know why it faded into such obscurity. I really enjoyed it.
