I had Mega-lo-mania on my Genesis and despite the awful controls on gamepad I loved it. I loved the tech advancement the most and it was really thrilling back in the days. So thrilling that I am currently making a PC strategy game with tech advancements myself: http://www.totemtribe.com

Hi, I just read your post today and wanted to say that I played this game through my childhood and I'm very happy to be able to play it now still. This was my first strategy game, followed by Dune 2 (also on Mega-drive // Sega Genesis) and I'm glad to see that more people see it as revolutionary.
I was actually planning to make some kind of "modern" version of it and I'm honestly surprised to see that noone tried (unless we take civilization as a modern version of it).

In any case, it was a good read, so thanks for that.

It still holds up pretty well today. What's going for it is that it's unique, so for me (I just finished it an hour ago) it's like playing an old boardgame. RTS got done to death with the Command & Conquer , Total Annihilation etc. and looks very old and tired today.

It was an era where most computer games came out of the UK and had good measures of humour.

I was old enough to play it unlike that snot-nosed commenter above so have fond associations with discovering the game at age 11. Those phrases like "No don't think so" "Huh! No!" "Why not. Alright!", even "Putting you on Hold" have stayed with me since. If I had never seen it before I might only get 10 minutes out of it.

The sound on the Amiga and Atari ST (which I played) was great; the Mars theme will now be forever associated in my head with tiny men beating the snot out of one another. Early PC sound effects were absolutely *dire*, though.

Loved playing Mega-Lo-Mania on my Amiga. Last time I had a go at it was a couple of years ago and I think it played well. I've never tried the PC version though, but the sound in the Amiga version was quite good in my opinion.

Maga Lo Mania passed me by entirely. I am not sure what I was doing at the time though...

Oh yes, I think I was being 5. (Mind you, I did have an Atari then, and a SNES not long after, and I think in between those there was a PC. I was gaming plenty by the time I was 7-8, but I can't quite remember when it all started.)

Pure RTS games are certainly not the massive force they once were, certainly. Company of Heroes is the last genuinely great one that I have played, and that came out about five years ago. Strategy isn't dead, of course, it's just that one genre where you gather stuff, upgrade stuff, and then fight with that stuff that has faded (and has sort of moved to facebook games)

Totally agree this was a game that started a revolution and spawned a genre of games like Age of Empires, Civilisation, Command and Conquer and even my personal favourite Empire Earth. RTS is very much still alive although it has manifested its self in different forms in recent years. I love retro games because without them we would not progress in the world of gaming so I still very much embrace them.
