Will never understand how people keep praising the hideous and faded colour looking graphics of this game. Everything blends into each other and the terrain. I've tried multiple times to play this game and can't ever recognize anything on the map as instantly as in every other Civ game. It all looks disgusting and a great example of that early awful 3D era of gaming that still persists in most 3D strategy games. Is that a unit? What kind? Is that a terrain decoration or a resource? Better start zooming in on everything and mouse hovering to be able to tell what the hell it is. And just wait until you start adding improvements everywhere to really clutter the whole place up...

Commenting on an old post I know but I wanted to point out an important bit-while Civ 6 does bring back dark ages, there's also a risk-reward aspect to it where getting a Golden age after a dark age turns it into a Heroic Age with extra powerful bonuses. You also get some Dark Age specific policy cards that can be situationally very powerful. I think it plays with the formula and gives more variety rather than being a punishment for sub-optimal play (in fact one strategy my friends would use is intentionally try for a dark age first so that the next age would be heroic, although it can be hard to pull off since you get a lot of age points in the early game just by exploring and regular milestones)

Thanks for the kind words. FWIW, I don't actually remember intentionally balancing the loss of Wonder bonuses with the bonus from obsolete techs, but I suppose it's possible! Also enjoyed your write-up on Civ3, which was a very necessary step to get to Civ4 (and is also in many ways the beginning of Civ as a franchise).

Think Civ 4 was the last one that was great out of the box. Civ 5 eventually wrangled itself into a great game too, but it took a few interface mods to be fully playable.

Not to mention Civ 4 was the last one I played decent multiplayer on. Civ 5 multiplayer didn't even function for years after release.

Definitely my favorite of the series, though the terrible issues with the slowdown in the late game means I rarely actually finish. I generally play until I am pretty much assured of the win. If it's a close game, I struggle through. Nearly everything about it is quality, and it's stayed on every computer I've had since it was released and still have the original disks and book. Definitely holds the record for playtime in any game for me.

Thanks for the writeup! I found Civ 4 in my Steam library, but there are some expansions, too. What's the nicest Civ 4 to play? Vanilla? Or with any of the expansions?

No argument here, it's still the best. I'm surprised you haven't done a write-up on Fall from Heaven; that mod accounts for easily half of my play time in Civ 4.
