We didn’t have any consoles when I was a nipper, but I did have a friend who had a Mega Drive, so I played and enjoyed a lot of those games at the time. It was a fine system, it’s just that today the technology used seems very rough around the edges compared to the SNES. Or maybe the SNES just had a better emulator. I don’t know.

And yeah, I’ve spent more money on GoG than I really should have on games that I already played and completed years ago. GoG provides a much better experience than abandonware, too, with their relatively hassle-free installs and the extras you get with them. I love having virtual versions of all the old Microprose manuals on my hard drive.

Master of Magic you might find to be a little clunky nowadays, but Darklands! Man. Do you have the GoG version that comes with the Clue Book? Because if you don’t you should get that since it basically explains how to play the game.

(I got the joystick because I thought I finally I might be able to get into X3. I was wrong.)

I need to get a joystick – got IL2-Sturmovik in a GOG sale.

I also have Darklands and Master of Magic, but haven’t played them properly yet.

Lovely reminiscing post, reminds me very much of my own experiences. I used to spend ages at uni trying to find and download roms (I didn’t have internet access of my own at the time) and then having to zip and split them across multiple floppy disks in order to get them home. Good days… I disagree slightly with your views on MegaDrive games, but yeah, many of them don’t hold up as well as some of their SNES counterparts. After emulation at uni, I then moved on to HotU at my first job, downloading onto CDs rather than floppies, until finally I get to where I am today giving far too much money to GoG, so I feel like I’m paying off some of my earlier abandonware habits. Most modern games just don’t interest me in the same way that the old ones do (and my ancient gaming rig can’t play anything vaguely current), so I find I still focus most of my game time on games from the 90s and early 2000s. I scratch my modern gaming itch with a PS3, but it doesn’t get much attention. I guess I’m just an old man with very rosy glasses.
