"It’s weirdly bland and amorphous and feels less amenable to that role-playing I liked so much, and the weak 4X gameplay on its own just isn’t enough to keep my attention. I did have one good game which had a bit of a story to it, on a map where all factions are stuck in a permanent hellwar and I had to stall enemies on one flank with hordes of summoned copper golems while desperately trying to mop up on the other before everything collapsed, but after I’d played four games I felt like there wasn’t all that much left to see and dropped Age of Wonders 4 entirely. Which, for a game that supposedly offers infinite variety, is a bit of a failure."

I’m with you on most of this. Diablo 4 was a huge letdown for me. They threw out what made 3 fun. I tried the first couple of seasons and it just all felt so tired and tiresome.
And Freelancer… wow. I loved that way back when. I note you don’t have Starfield on your list, but for me that was a big, wow they really nailed the freelancer vibe, swiftly followed by oh wait, never mind

Funny how you don't like WH40K Rogue Trader as much as Pathfinder games. PFKM/WotR made me very angry cause they felt like perfect games I'd replay a dozen times like BioWare or Obsidian title, but the version I got has a kitchensink amateur mod installed on top of it adding hundreds of fights, hundreds of pointless classes and perks poorly supported by UI, and a general design philosophy you see in true hardcore mods for popular RPGs. And WH40K feels like I finally got an Owlcat game without this mod. WH world is less interesting to me than generic fantasy for a story-focused RPG cause I don't see a lot of stories and player choice there (so far it's always chaos turning people evil, and the extent of my choices is whether I should shoot relatives of the heretics just in case) and there might still be too many fights. But the combat is fun and varied and the abilities are original, character progression is cool. It might not be a game I'll replay again and again, but it's probably the first Owlcat game I am enjoying without a big list of deal-breaking complaints attached. Also I hear the complaint about exploration, but I feel it's kind of legacy feature: big empty spaces that happen to have points of interest are doing the same job as the big overworld map with points of interest, and storybook events are doing a better job at providing an interesting encouner than traditional BG1-style encounters. I like Tyranny/Pillars of Eternity 2 not having big maps except for towns where it makes sense. If anything I'd prefer Rogue Trader to ditch those too, e.g. the march through rebelious town in the beginning of the game could be skipped or replaced with some sort of random encounters while travelling through the overworld map.

Not to say you're wrong of course, just saying it's a game that can be easier to love than previous games by Owlcat.

Some things I disagree with pretty strongly here, but I'm with you on Dredge. I picked it up after Christmas after seeing Rockpapershotgun compare the DLC favorably to Bloodborne, and frankly I don't understand what the hell they're smoking. It's a cute enough game, but the horror is barely there.
